How To Cut A Boneless Northern Pike Fillet
Northern Pike
is actually quite tasty when caught out of the cold pristine
lakes of northern Canada. Below is an
excellent video presentation on cutting the perfect boneless
northern pike fillet.
Notice how Jason wears that glove and uses a fork to hold
the fillet down while he fillets it. That's a great idea and
he really knows how to make short work of a Northern Pike on
the fillet table.
The Northern Pike he fillets in this video is small but you
get an real nice view of what's going on there.
Some people say it's impossible to cut a boneless northern
pike fillet but it can be done and the proof is right here
in the video. We have been using this technique for years.
If you have a fish die in the live well or when being
caught, eating them is the best thing to do. So when you
have a pike die before it's time to leave camp cut some
boneless fillets and enjoy your pike.

Yes it's a
little more advanced than cutting a normal fillet but it's
really not extremely difficult. It is a little tougher
to feel when you contact the Y-bones on a smaller northern
but if you listen to the audio on the above video you can
actually hear the knife contacting the Y-bones on the
downward cut. Once you make the first incision shown in the
video simply change the angle of your fillet knife to aim
toward the dorsal fin or top of the fillet.
Then all
you have to do is make the second cut by cutting underneath
the Y-bones on an angle slightly down and toward the top
again. It's fairly simple and it just takes a little
practice.
I don't recommend packing an electric knife on a Canada fly
in fishing trip though. They are heavy and you may not have
a way to recharge the battery. First timers won't be able to
feel the bones as easily either. It's up to you though, if
you don't mind paying extra weight fees bring one along it
will likely save a little time.
